Frequently Asked Questions

A family day care scheme (FDCS) is an approved type of childcare service provider. Children who are enrolled in a family day care scheme receive care and education from professionally qualified 'child educators' who operate from their own homes. Depending on the arrangements agreed, educators offer full-time care, part-time care, weekend care, evening care, before and after school care, overnight care and pick-up/drop-off of children. Parents and/or guardians are encouraged to choose an educator that is best for their needs and circumstances. The role of a 'Scheme' and 'Co-ordination Unit' is to approve, train and support its educators, as well as co-ordinate the relationship between parents, children, educators and regulatory authorities. Over 211,000 children are enrolled with more than 16,000 educators in Family Day Cares across Australia. Children under care are delivered a structured learning and play environment, which is guided by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) for children below school-age and the My Time Our Place framework for school-age children. Meals are provided at the discretion of the educator and/or parent. Regular outings, excursions are also a part of the program with consent from the parent.
All operating Family Day Care Schemes in Australia are Government-approved. The practices and procedures of FDCs are regulated by the Australian Children's Education and Care Authority (ACECQA). The National Government Regulatory body oversees all child care service providers in Australia. The ACECQA ensures that FDCs are compliant with the National Quality Framework (NQF) which was introduced in 2012. It enforces standard, quality care, safety and adequacy of child care providers in all states across Australia.
All educators employed by a Family Day Care Schemes are qualified or working towards - Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care. They are trained in First Aid (including emergencies, CPR and Asthma and Anaphylaxis management) and have a valid Working with Children’s Check (WWCC). Educators' homes are also regularly inspected by their Schemes Coordinators and government agencies to ensure and maintain compliance. The educators attend regular Professional Development programs to keep them up to date with the requirements.
Parents and guardians requiring financial assistance for their childcare costs may be eligible for the CCB (childcare benefit) and CCR (childcare rebate) via Centre link. The level of assistance may vary depending on circumstances (being income tested), but it usually consists of regular payments or a lump sum.
